![]() It uniquely featured both American and Chinese food. Certainly when out-of-town family came to town, we gathered there. When I was growing up in the ‘50’s, our family often ate at Joy Young on Sundays and special occasions. ![]() That reputation served them well as the Ku Klux Klan found no support from the public in efforts to drive the restaurant out of business.” The owner Mansion Joe, and manager Henry Loo, had earned reputations as friendly, generous businessmen, sometimes helping provide meals to the needy. The name of the restaurant was Joy Young and I ate hundreds of meals there in my youth and young adult years.Īccording to BhamWiki, “In October 1925 the restaurant moved to 412 20th Street North opposite the Tutwiler Hotel, soon expanding into the former shop next door. There have been other great restaurants past or present, but in my heart and stomach, none compare to an American Chinese Restaurant that opened in 1919 and operated successfully mostly in downtown Birmingham for about 70 years. We have fantastic restaurants…like Highland Bar & Grill, El Barrio, Automatic Seafood, and Helen. (Similar to ‘Mandarin Special’ from Joy Young. The negatives could be easy fixes.‘Special Dinner Any Time,’ with egg roll Chop Suey Inn. Really good food, just bad service sometimes and roaches. Especially when you visit multiple times and see a roach every time. My experience is that if there's one roach there are more in other areas. I stopped going when I saw a roach two times in a row. Guy at the front would argue and yell at other staff members on top of the store not being the cleanest. The service is questionable especially when they would be busy. Great food, the best Egg Rolls I've had anywhere. My experience here over the past year is that their food is good. Took like 2 bites and just trashed the whole meal. It had a bland taste and had this weird powdery texture to it to it. Only complaint was that the shrimp inside was not deveined. Ordered the Mongolian Beef with one egg roll. ![]() Pulled it apart and now instead of shrimp the standard egg rolls come with some type of very bland chicken inside.įinal Take: Score is overall better because the food was at least edible this time but the egg rolls have gone down and one of the most popular items, the Mongolian beef lacked flavor and spice. This place was known for having the best egg rolls in arguably the state. Right amount of Mongolian sauce just needs more flavor.īiggest Con: Now the most disappointing thing to me is the egg roll. When this restaurant was at it's peak, I would order this dish and it was be perfectly spicy and it was not something I needed to request. I think you can request it to be more spicy. I know a lot of Chinese restaurants lessen spice to cater to America taste but that was disappointing. The dish was listed as a spicy dish but it had no spice at all. While the beef was cooked perfectly, there was little to no flavor and spice. I think there's a technique they use to make it really soft, I personally don't care for the texture when it's really soft like that but I understand some people do.Ĭons: Even if you call ahead you may wait a while. I ordered the Mongolian beef, fried rice, and 1 egg roll. ![]() My last year review was a 1 out of 5.įirst the pros: Food looked amazing.
